Just
because television "reporting" is an oxymoron
in Chicago doesn't mean you have to despair. Just because
the Sun-Times and Tribune publish the latest PR handouts
from City Hall and Daley's appointed administration
as if they were the facts doesn't mean you can't report
the news of public schools in Chicago accurately. It
just takes some training, hard work, and a willingness
to look behind today's fairy tales to the gritty reality
of the schools where we work and the classrooms where
we teach. Substance is taking applications for our reporting classes, which meet two Wednesday evenings per month, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The classes emphasize old-style Chicago news reporting, not today's repackaged public relations drivel. We will teach you how to get to the facts that rest behind the lies, the spin, and the press releases.
