Old Style Chicago Reporting — Substance style PDF Print E-mail
Just because television "reporting" is an oxymoron in Chicago doesn't mean you have to despair. Just because the Sun-Times and Tribune publish the latest PR handouts from City Hall and Daley's appointed administration as if they were the facts doesn't mean you can't report the news of public schools in Chicago accurately. It just takes some training, hard work, and a willingness to look behind today's fairy tales to the gritty reality of the schools where we work and the classrooms where we teach.

Substance is taking applications for our reporting classes, which meet two Wednesday evenings per month, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

The classes emphasize old-style Chicago news reporting, not today's repackaged public relations drivel. We will teach you how to get to the facts that rest behind the lies, the spin, and the press releases.

If you are interested in learning how to be a news reporter on a tough but interesting beat, send a letter or e-mail to the editor of Substance.

In your letter or e-mail, explain
  • Who you are

  • What you know about the city's public schools

  • Where you began learning about Chicago

  • When you first became interested in news reporting

  • Why you want to report for Substance.

When you have written this letter, you will have learned the first rules of journalism: Answer the five key questions in each article.

Please do not send a resumé. Be sure to include your current phone number with your letter.

Please send your applications to:
