What is Substance?
JANUARY 30, 2008

You have reached what we call the "old" Substance Website. For the past year, Substance has been developing a new Website which is now avilable at www.substancenews.net. You can find recent issues of Substance at substancenews.net, while back issues will still be available at substancenews.com (here) while we make a complete transition to the new media.

We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to subscribe to the print edition of Substance by sending $16 (check or money order, payable to Substance) for a one-year subscription to Substance. Mail your subscription to Substance, 5132 W. Berteau, Chicago, IL 60641.

Substance is the only truly independent media voice reporting on Chicago's public schools, and one of the few trying to report more broadly on the threats to public education across the USA. We receive no money from foundations or wealthy interests whose version of "school reform" is, in our opinion, an attack on the 200 year tradition of public education in the USA. Consequently, we are not as slick or wealthy as some publications that supposedly report "news" of public education nationally (Education Week comes to mind) or locally in Chicago (Catalyst immediately comes to mind).

But our voice is as free as the readers who subscribe to Substance, read our pages every month, and contribute their thoughts to our ongoing defense of democracy and public education in the USA.

For those of you who think that $16 per year is "too much" to pay for a voice of freedom, consider the alternatives. Meanwhile, we will continue to publish our current issue on the Web (at www.substancenews.net) 60 days after it is mailed to our print subscribers. And the site you are reading here (substancenews.com) will remain up so that people can get some of the truth about what has been happening in Chicago and around the USA under the smokescreen of "school reform" for the past decade.

Sincerely, George N. Schmidt Editor, Substance
